North Africa and Middle East Campaigns

Australians formed a large part of the Commonwealth force that overran Italian positions in Libya in early 1941, though the Allies were subsequently pushed back eastwards by Nazi Germany's rapid counterattack. In the Syria-Lebanon sector, the Allies had more success, defeating the facist Vincy French forces in July.

Greece and Crete Campaigns

Australians served in hard-fought campaigns on mainland Greece and Crete against the German invasion. Despite the ultimate defeat, Australian service personnel had shared experiences with locals that outlasted the war.

Establishment of Women's Services

Australia began to realise the difference that women serving in uniform could make to the war effort. The Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAF), Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) and Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) were all formed in 1941.
