Description

Commemorating 200 years since Australia’s first Royal Agricultural Societies were established in Tasmania and New South Wales and the first agricultural show was held in 1822, the Royal Australian Mint has released a specially designed coloured dollar coin to mark the anniversary.

The release recognise the contributions of Australia’s eight states and territory Royal Agricultural Societies, the agricultural shows that run each year, and the many dedicated volunteers who contribute to these iconic community events.

Two hundred years ago, the young colony of Tasmania founded an agricultural society and soon after, staged an exhibition of the fine produce of their farmers and artisans. This was the first such Royal Agricultural Society and the first agricultural show held in Australia.
Since then, agricultural shows have become a part of Australian community life and there are now Royal Agricultural Societies in each state and territory of Australia.

Agricultural shows in Australia have weathered wars, depressions, drought, product price slumps, and most recently, pandemics. Today, they are still the main representative of agriculture in contemporary society providing an important link between the city and country.
With 50,000 volunteers involved across all shows and over 6 million people attending each year, agricultural shows are amongst the largest community events in the country.

Nothing conjures the experience of an agricultural show like the sights and sounds of the ring and sideshow alley, the frantic thud of the woodchopping competition and the prized livestock and produce arrayed in the pavilions.
