Description

An ideal collectable for fans of aviation and history, this commemorative stamp and coin cover celebrates the extraordinary feat achieved 100 years ago of the first flight from England to Australia.

The 17,000 kilometre journey was completed in an open cockpit Vickers ‘Vimy’ aircraft by an Australian crew comprising Captain Ross Smith, his brother Lieutenant Keith Smith, Sergeant Wally Shiers and Sergeant James Bennett.
Taking off from London on 12 November 1919, the men braved extreme weather conditions to land in Darwin 28 days later on December 10.

The coin’s reverse portrays a representation of the converted ex-WWI bomber that made the harrowing expedition and a map of the flight path. The design also includes the inscription ‘Centenary of First Flight England to Australia’.
