Description
The tradition of placing effigies of the reigning monarch on the obverse of coins dates back centuries.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British monarch in 2015. Since her 1953 coronation, there have been six different effigies of the Queen on Australian coins. The previous effigies were designed by Mary Gillick (1953), Arnold Machin (1966), Raphael Maklouf (1985), Ian Rank-Broadley (1998) and Vladimir Gottwald (2000). The sixth and most recent effigy, is based on a drawing by UK designer Jody Clark.
