Description

As we commemorate the centenary of the First World War, we pay tribute to the 60 000 Australians who endured personal hardships, sacrifices and sufferings for their country.

The Hall of Memory at the heart of the Australian War Memorial features an impressive mosaic which was crafted over a period of 20 years, commencing in 1937, by a soldier who was wounded in the First World War, Napier Waller. The Hall of Memory now also houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of the most visited areas in the Memorial.
A portrait of one of the seemingly ordinary soldiers has been taken from the remarkable mosaic and features in the design.

Radiating feelings of strength and endurance, the enlarged and intense eyes of the soldier are characteristic of the ancient Greek sculpture and Byzantine mosaic. The Gallipoli peninsula where Anzac troops fought is represented in this piece with sprigs of rosemary, which were commonly found growing wild on the battlefield.

This coin is struck by the Royal Australian Mint in partnership with the Australian War Memorial to Remember The Fallen.
