The koala is a warm-blooded marsupial that lives mainly on the eastern coast of Australia. Dependent on whether it is found in the southern parts of eastern Australia or in the northern parts, its size and colour will vary. This unique animal sleeps for up to 19 hours a day due to its low metabolic rate, and can live for 20 or more years.

The coin's reverse depicts an adult koala sitting in the fork of a eucalyptus tree, amid a rural landscape.
