Description

Since 1965, the Royal Australian Mint has been producing the coins that Australians have used in their everyday lives. These coins have meant different things to many different people. Whether they have been used as items for day-to-day spending, treasured as pieces of art, admired for the history and culture celebrated on them or arousing nostalgic memories, they have had an unwavering presence for everybody in the country.
As the first wholly Australian-operated mint, its primary function was to produce the coins to be used after Australia’s changeover to decimal currency.
Half a century later, these circulating coins are still adorned with iconic Australian images, showing the nation’s great pride in its people and unique fauna.
Throughout the years, many commemorative and collectable coins have celebrated important aspects of Australian history, culture and society.
