Description

The aptly named Yellow-billed Kingfisher (Syma torotoro) has an olive-grey back and wings, and a golden head and shoulders, with black spots towards the back of the neck.
Its range in Australia is limited to the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula, where the remoteness and inaccessibility make sightings relatively rare.
The Yellow-billed Kingfisher departs Cape York for New Guinea during the dry season, returning to Australia to breed at the onset of the wet season. It nests in the arboreal mounds created by termites, constructing its nest just prior to breeding.

The coin’s reverse depicts an irresistible image of a Yellow-billed Kingfisher perched on a branch.
