Description

The 2013 Young Collectors ‘Experience It!’ series features six coins, each of which portrays an outdoor sport or leisure activity in which Australian kids love to partake, with skiing being the third fun release.

Skiing is an exhilarating sport that provides fun and fitness for people of all ages, skill levels and gender.

Generally, skiing is a winter sport that involves ways of travelling over snow with skis. It is a great recreational activity and an exciting competitive sport, being a major part of the winter Olympic Games. Ski events include Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboarding and Nordic events. Some professions that utilise skiing skills include ski schools and instructors, rangers, emergency and rescue services and specialised police and military units.
Ability to control the skis, endurance, speed, athleticism and flexibility are all skills a skier can develop. There is a wide variety of techniques including rails, slides, flips spins and grabs to be learned – with the newer moves evolving into even more thrilling stunts.

Australia has several well developed ski resorts, including Thredbo and Perisher in New South Wales, and Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller in Victoria. Cross country skiing is popular in such parks as Kosciuszko National Park and Alpine National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness.
