Description

Phar Lap is Australia's most famous horse, and whenever anyone is asked to mention one horse, more than likely Phar Lap will be mentioned.

The Perth Mint released this special 1oz silver proof coin as a fitting tribute, marking the 75th anniversary of his untimely death.

This coin will undoubtedly catch the imagination of many Australians who remain fascinated by the legend that is Phar Lap. Suspicion surrounding the demise of Phar Lap refuses to go away, even after 75 years. On 5 April 1932, Australia's greatest racehorse died in puzzling circumstances on a ranch in California. Devastated by the news, many Australians were convinced that their beloved chestnut gelding, the winner of 37 races from just 51 starts, had been deliberately poisoned.

The coin portrays him at the pinnacle of his extraordinary career at Flemington racecourse. The coin's reverse depicts jockey Jim Pike riding Phar Lap to victory in the 1930 Melbourne Cup.

This coin is strictly limited to only 7,500 of these coins.

Each coin is housed in a stylish presentation case and illustrated shipper, accompanied by a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity
