On the 12th of September 1854, the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Co. which linked Melbourne with its port, became the first steam railway to open in Australia.
The company began building its four kilometre line only the year before. Soon after being tested in May 1854, Australia's first steam train - essentially an improvised locomotive hauling several ballast trucks took directors of the new railway company for a ride at giddying speeds up to 29 kilometres per hour.
The company had two steam trains built and they successfully operated the Melbourne Hobson's Bay Railway Co's half-hourly service between Melbourne and Sandridge (Later Port Melbourne) until the end of the year, marking the beginning of the railway age in Australia.
Issued under the authority of the Cook Islands, this pure proof silver coin, featuring colour on its reverse design, has been released by the Perth Mint to mark the 150th Anniversary of this important milestone in railway history. This coin has a limited mintage of only 4,000 coins worldwide and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
