2009 Masterpieces in Silver

The Royal Australian Mint has released the 2009 Masterpieces in silver coins. The second set of coins in this series with the next and last due in 2010. The Masterpieces in Silver Aviation History series will acknowledge the proud history and significant contribution to the origins and development of Australian aviation.

The Second release will honour two memorable aircraft: the De Havilland DH 86 used to initially fly the mail route from Darwin to Singapore and the Constellation L749 which flew the famous ‘ Kangaroo Route’ from Sydney to London.

2009 Australia Post Bicentenary Two Coin Set

Beautifully presented in a wooden box, these two coins have been struck by the Royal Australian Mint for Australia Post to celebrate 200 years of postal services in Australia. The Pad Printed Australia Post Bicentenary Five Dollar Coin design depicts Isaac Nichol’s Sydney house where he became Australia ’s first Postmaster in 1809 – a position he held until 1819. The artwork on the coin is taken from a photograph in “History of the Post Office in New South Wales ” by Andrew Houison, Sydney, 1890. The Australia Post Bicentenary One Dollar Coin design features an early posting box like the “Red Sentinels” posting boxes which have stood guard on the streets of cities and towns in Australia for over 150 years. In 1856, the first cast-iron street posting boxes were installed on Sydney ’s streets. Prior to this, the public handed in their letters at a post office or to a postman on his delivery rounds. Cast-iron posting boxes were designed in a wide range of shapes and sizes. This set comes with a numbered certificate and is limited to only 7,200 sets being released.

2009 Australia Post
Bicentennial PNC

The Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post have combined to release this special coin and stamp cover (pnc). The coin and stamp cover features an early posting box. The red post boxes stood guard on most street on the cities and towns around Australia for more than 150 years. The cover features a 55c stamp and comes with a dollar coin which is only available in this cover.

2009 Kangaroo Master Mintmark
Dollar Uncirculated Coin

In 2009 the Royal Australian Mint sees the completion of the most substantial upgrade to its facilities since its original construction in 1965. To mark the occasion the Mint will be releasing a newly designed Master Mintmark which will be used on the standard $1 coin design. The mark featuring the letter ‘C’ with a kangaroo passing through it was chosen by the mint’s CEO Janine Murphy from a selection of motifs product by Mint design staff. The Master Mintmark logo is presented in die-cut packaging that folds into a miniature Mint building.

2009 Kangaroo Series Special Edition

2009 International Year of Astronomy
Meteorite Five Dollar Silver Proof Coin

The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating the International Year of Astronomy with this exciting release of a Five dollar silver proof coin which contains pieces of meteorite. This unique coin features a blister packed centerpiece filled with fragments of an authentic meteorite. The reverse design illustrates the connection we all share with the universe through intricate drawings. The Meteorite encapsulated in this coin fell to earth around 4000 years ago, as part of the Campo Del Ceilo (Field of Heaven) meteorite shower in Argentina. This coin has a limited mintage of only 10,000 coins and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

2009 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

This is the final coin of three special coins released for the International polar year. The Royal Australian mint has released the Aurora Australis Hologram coin showing a silhouette of a sailing ship. The colour of the hologram changes to represent this celestial phenomenon of the Aurora Australis. The fine silver proof coin also features the holographic images of the Three Explorers, Skua and the Aurora. 2009 International Polar Year
Five Dollar Silver Proof Coin

The second silver coin in this series has been released by the Royal Australian Mint and features Australia's first Antarctica's explores to the Southern continent on the Ernest Shackleton Expedition; Douglas Mawson, Tannat Edgeworth David and Forbes Mackay. The design features the moment the three men reached the South Magnetic Pole in January 1909. The background shows a map of the Australian Antarctic Territory with the location details of several key scientific base camps.

Ken Done, is the final artist to contribute to the Royal Australian Mints Great Australian Artist Kangaroo series. Ken is an internationally known artist and is famous for his colourful and distinctive style. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Ken Done's art was selected to be displayed on some limited edition pins, these pins were highly sort after and sold out. The silver kangaroo coin is made from 99.9% pure 1oz silver and is finished in frosted uncirculated. The Mintage for the silver uncirculated coin is 20,000.
