2009 International Polar Year
$5 Silver Proof Coin
The second silver coin in this series has been released by the Royal Australian Mint and features Australia's first Antarctica's explores to the Southern continent on the Ernest Shackleton Expedition; Douglas Mawson, Tannat Edgeworth David and Forbes Mackay. The design features the moment the three men reached the South Magnetic Pole in January 1909. The background shows a map of the Australian Antarctic Territory with the location details of several key scientific base camps.

Ken Done, is the final artist to contribute to the Royal Australian Mints Great Australian Artist Kangaroo series. Ken is an internationally known artist and is famous for his colourful and distinctive style. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Ken Done's art was selected to be displayed on some limited edition pins, these pins were highly sort after and sold out. The silver kangaroo coin is made from 99.9% pure 1oz silver and is finished in frosted uncirculated. The Mintage for the silver uncirculated coin is 20,000.
