The Royal Australian Mint has just announced the release of the 2006 Subscription Coin to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Decimal Currency in Australia with the release of the stunning historical 1758 Pillar Dollar design - the first antique silver subscription coin!
The reproduction of the 1758 Pillar Dollar, which is also known as Spanish Dollar, has been meticulously and artistically designed and crafted on the 2006 $1 Antique silver subscription coin by our renowned designer – Wojciech Pietranik.
The Pillar Dollar was struck by Mexico Mint and played an important role in colonial Australia. The design has a scroll running across the Pillars of Hercules in the “S” shape and is believed to have been the basis for the current dollar symbol. The reverse of this coin features the two pillars symbolising the Pillars of Hercules – the Straights of Gibraltar; which represent the titles and power of the Emperor Charles V, who was also King Charles of Spain: the left pillar was crowned with the Imperial Crown and the right one was crown with the Royal Crown with waves where Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea met, divided by two interlocked globes represent Spain’s “old world” metropolis and the “new world” of their South American colonies crowned by a single crown. The obverse portrays a crowned shield with lions, castles and pomergranate. This magnificent coin is housed in a presentation case accompanying with a certificate of authenticity.
This coin has a mintage of only 9,846.
