The first steam train left Flinders Street Station for Sandridge (Port Melbourne). A $5 silver proof coin has been chosen by the Royal Australian Mint to feature a steam train emerging from the Australian landscape, recognising the significance of this event in the development of the whole of the country. On 3rd July 1850 the daughter of the NSW governor turned the turf to mark the commencement of the construction of Australia's first railway. The Sydney Railway Company had taken the first steps in realising a dream of linking the productive rural districts with the heart of the commercial development in the cities. However, the attraction of instant wealth on the gold fields interrupted the works.
It was May 1855 before the first train left Sydney Station for Long Cove. Meanwhile, with rivalry between the colonies running at a high, the Hobson's Bay Railway Company had completed a line between Flinders Street and Port Melbourne. The first train left on 12th September 1854 before a large gathering. Complimenting the coin is the packaging; the leatherette presentation case being inspired by the leather upholstery of the early steam trains and a booklet capturing the historic milestones in the 150 years since the first steam railway was opened.
The mintage of this coin is limited to 15,000.

The Bicentenary of Tasmania is a milestone in Australian history, which is being recognised by the Royal Australian Mint in 2004. The fine silver proof coin was a huge success with collectors, the low mintage being sold out within weeks. To continue the celebrations and provide an opportunity for all Tasmanians to collect this commemorative coin, the Mint has worked closely with the Tasmanian Bicentennial Committee to produce the same design on an affordable collector coin.
The Aluminum / Zinc / Bronze uncirculated $5 coin has been struck to capture the beautiful design which was so well received on the silver proof coin. A first for the Mint is the inclusion of an 'H' for Hobart mintmark on a 38.74 mm $5 coin. This uncirculated coin has been enhanced with frosting to highlight the detail and beauty of the design. The coin is packed in a blister, held in a three part coin holder and inserted in a sleeve for display. The coin is sure to be sought by all collectors and the mintage will be to demand.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the $1 coin, the Royal Australian Mint is to release this truly unique collection of fine silver coins. The six coins in the set expound the skills of the master craftsmen and tell an intriguing story about the history of the dollar coin. The past and the present are captured in the designs selected for their place in the development of the coin. Research in the Mint National Coin Collection revealed three coin designs, which have not been previously seen by collectors or the Australian public. The wombat design was submitted by Stuart Devlin. The other of five kangaroos has remained in the collection and included as a glimpse at what might have been. These have now been struck for the first time.
A very rare inclusion is the seven-sided experimental coin, which used the design of an Imperial Lion. This Test Piece was subsequently rejected due to impracticality and manufacturing difficulties at that time, ruling this shape out as a circulating coin. These three coins alone are 'firsts' for numismatic enthusiasts. This set is limited to only 18,000 sets. The 2004 Masterpieces in Silver has captured the essence of the twenty year history of the dollar coin in six coins, each with unique qualities, which is sure to see a high demand for the set.

Australia's coins are among the most beautiful in the world. Featuring artwork that reflects the natural splendor of our fauna and culture with rare style and grace, these coins are crafted in pure silver, for the collector who appreciates quality and who seeks to acquire an important part of our cultural heritage. The set includes all of our standard coins, which in turn portray an Echidna, Lyrebird, Platypus, our Coat of Arms, a group of Kangaroos and a dignified Aboriginal Elder. Australian collectors' interest in a fine silver version of the Proof Year Set, was realised in 2003 with the Mint's first release of a Fine Silver Year Set. The response to the premium quality and presentation saw a quick sell-out of the 6,500 mintage. Finished to a standard of the highest calibre and presented in a Tasmanian Oak box, this 2004 Silver Proof Year Set will remain a treasured part of any collection for years to come. The Royal Australian Mint has maintained the low mintage of only 6,500 sets.

A major part in the Australian history will be the Bicentennial of Tasmanian settlement. The Royal Australian Mint has released a $5 silver proof coin to help celebrate the occasion. Tasmania holds a special attraction for all who visit her shores and this fine coin has been minted in honour of this special event. The design captures the spirit of the sea travel and exploration, the rich cultural heritage of Tasmania and her rugged beauty of her flora. The centrepiece of the coin is a commanding image of the Lady Nelson, sails full against the ocean breeze, cutting through the ocean. Other highlights include a map of the state and meticulously rendered leatherwood blooms which are native to the island. The Tasmanian theme continues with the coin being presented in a Tasmanian oak box. The descriptive card included provides the numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Another attraction for this coin is the very limited mintage of only 7,500 coins being minted. Be sure to be quick to order this coin as they will sail out. This coin is sold out at the Royal Australian Mint.

The 2004 $1 fine silver proof and the $1 aluminum bronze uncirculated coin commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Eureka Stockade has been released by the Royal Australian Mint. This historic event took place on the 3rd of December 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria. The Stockade was a result of gold miners resentment of expensive and discriminatory taxes and the high-handed tactics of the authorities. This act of rebellion, courage and the raising of the crudely made blue and white flag is seen today as the origin of the Australian Spirit, the 'Eureka' flag has become a symbol of democracy and Eureka the birthplace of the Australian Spirit. The fine silver proof coin has been minted from 99.9% fine silver and has a limited mintage of only 20,000, it also comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which is numbered.
For the first time, a letter 'E' will be struck on an Australian legal tender $1 coin and will be struck on the site of the stockade, now home to the Eureka Centre.
