2003 "Saluting Australia's Volunteers"
Proof and Mint Sets
Baby Proof and Mint Sets

The 2003 six coin proof and mint set marks a stirring salute to the scores of unsung individuals who together form the heart and soul of Australia:
Our Fabulous Volunteers
.
Each year, across all aspects of society, over 4 million Australians give freely of their time in some way to help others and benefit their communities.

This outstanding issue will ensure the drive and dedication of these tireless individuals is given lasting recognition. The Dollar coin pad printed in green and gold for the proof set carries the rallying theme "Making a Difference", the coloured dollar is only available in the proof set. The 50 cent coin features a kaleidoscope of volunteers from emergency services, meals on wheels, shelters, charity operations as well as conservationists, sports volunteers, firefighters and surf lifesavers, all going about their duties every day without any fanfare or fuss.
For the first time in a year set, the 20 cent piece has also been specially redesigned to carry the Volunteer theme. This coin shows a group portrait of a tiny cross section of Australians, showing that any one can be a volunteer.

2003 Australia's Volunteers
"Finale" $5 Silver Proof Coin

The 2003 'Finale' coin has been announced as the last in the Mint's extremely successful three coin 'Finale' series. Australia's only Hologram coins (or OVD coins - Optically Variable Device), the two coins issued to date have been overwhelmingly well accepted and this final one is again expected to be a sell out. Australia's renowned volunteer culture is the focus of the hologram design for the 2003 coin. The release of this splendid coin salutes all those people who give of their time to help our community and "Make a difference".
This spectacular coin features the faces of three Australians from all walks of life, symbolising the fact that anyone can contribute or become a volunteer.
This is a rare numismatic issue that combines the striking beauty of a silver proof coin, the precision of 21st Century minting technology and a theme which reflects the spirit of all Australians and their culture. Mintage on this coin has been set at only 15,000 worldwide and is minted from 99.9% fine silver and has a proof finish. The coin is presented in a presentation case with a numbered certificate. This coin would make a wonderful addition to the first and second hologram coin collection and a great start to everyone's collection.

2003 Sydney Mint Sovereign Pattern
$10 Silver Proof Coin

The second coin in the series of the Royal Australian Mint's $10 Commemorative Numismatic issue features the Sydney Mint Sovereign Pattern. This second coin in this series continues the theme reflecting 'beacon' issues from Australia's short but interesting numismatic history. The first coin issued in this series was the very highly acclaimed Adelaide Pound commemorative coin that sold out in relatively short time. It is appropriate that the Pattern is featured this year as it is 150 years ago that the Sydney Mint Sovereign Pattern was designed by James Wyon. The Commemorative coin features the Pattern on a gold plated silver plug, in the centre of the proof silver 'host' coin. Together with the coin in its special 'display' presentation case, a new coin packaging concept developed by the Mint for the Adelaide Pound and continued with this coin, is a 12 page booklet, which incorporates the numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
The booklet deliberately concentrates on the Patterns and Wyon, and not the development of the Mint in Sydney, and contains a major contribution from Dr G P Dyer previously Curator of the Museum of the British Royal Mint. Mintage on this coin has been set at only 10,000 worldwide and is minted from 99.9% fine silver and the centre ring is plated with 24ct gold, and the coin has a proof finish.

Rugby World Cup 2003
Selective Gold Plated
$5 Silver Proof Coin

Australia was chosen as the sole hosts for the Rugby World Cup 2003, with the final being played here for the first time. The Rugby World Cup is now widely regarded as the third biggest sporting event in the world, after the Olympics and Soccer World Cup. The biggest international sporting event for 2003 commenced on the 10th of October and culminates in Sydney for the final on the 22nd of November. During the Tournament the world's 20 best rugby teams contested 48 matches over 44 days
in 10 cities across Australia.

To Commemorate the historic occasion of the Rugby World Cup 2003 being hosted in Australia, the Royal Australian Mint issued a special edition silver proof coin.
It features the magnificent prize at the centre of this wonderful sporting event: The William Webb Ellis Cup.
This proof coin has been produced using the mint's new selective gold plating technology. The centre oval of the reverse side is gold plated with the image of the Webb Ellis Cup struck onto the gold plating.

2003 Masterpieces in Silver
150th Anniversary of the
Port Phillip Patterns

The Royal Australian Mint released the 2003 annual series Masterpieces in Silver. This year's release of 4 pure silver proof coins commemorates a unique piece of numismatic history involving the production of the Port Phillip Patterns. The story of the Port Phillip Patterns, also known as the Taylor Patterns or Kangaroo Office Patterns is about an early nineteenth century entrepreneur for whom this venture brought no success, yet left behind an Australian Numismatic enigma. The designs of the patterns are each produced within a fine silver 'Host' coin. The silver replicas enable each collector to own a full set of the original Kangaroo Office Patterns, with their designs as close to the original as possible. While the original patterns were in gold and because of their history the Patterns, produced in fine silver would make a beautiful modern Masterpieces in Silver set. Each set includes a coined silver plaque, as well as in informative booklet which gives a further detailed background to the story of the Patterns and includes a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
The mintage of this fine set is limited to only 10,000 worldwide.

2003 $1 Aluminum Bronze
Vietnam Veterans Uncirculated Coin

The Royal Australian Mint has released to honour the service personnel who served in Vietnam.
Whilst it celebrates the service of our returned troops, this coin also pays tribute to those 519, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Australia. The style of the $1 aluminum bronze coin is intended to be contemporary, simple and clean. It's design echoes some of the major architectural and design elements of the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra's Anzac Parade. The coin is packaged in a concertina type card, similar to the 'Victoria Cross' coin packaging.
The packaging has a coloured picture of the Memorial taken at night. In addition, the mint commissioned a military historian from the Australian War Memorial to write an overview of the conflict which features on the card.

2003 Silver Dollar and
Uncirculated Bronze Coins
Korean War Commemorative Issue

2003 represents the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War. As a founding member of the UN, Australia was among the first countries to commit units of all three services to Korea in early July 1950, with 17,000 Australians serving until the armistice ended the fighting on the 27th July 1953. To honour the veterans who served in this important chapter in Australia's long and distinguished war history, the Royal Australian Mint is releasing this very special commemorative issue. The coin incorporates themes used in the Australian National Korean War Memorial in Canberra with the imposing vertical lines in the background of the design echoing the stainless steel spars around the memorial - a symbol for the fields of fallen. Emerging from this darkest of times is the dove of peace symbolising hope for the future and the floral emblems of Australia and South Korea reflect the ongoing tie between the two countries. The $1 Fine Silver Proof coin has a mintage of only 15,000, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The $1 aluminum bronze coin, bearing the raised 'C' mintmark of Canberra, is presented in the customary three panel card. The packaging of both issues carries the theme and imagery depicted in the coin including a photo of the War Memorial in haunting half-lit hues, providing a poignant reminder of the horrifying cost of war and the enduring quest for peace.

2003 $1 Silver Proof Subscription Coin
Holey Dollar and Dump

The seventh in the Royal Australian Mint's acclaimed Subscription Series, this pure $1 silver proof coin celebrates one of Australia' s earliest and most intriguing forms of currency - The Holey Dollar and Dump.
The 2003 Subscription coin recreates the original Holey Dollar and Dump at their actual size, with a partial overlap between the two giving an attractive crescent moon shape to the signature hole in the centre of the coin. Surrounded by a modern, proof finish ring, a cameo-like over stamping of the Queen's effigy bridges the 'old' and 'new' coins, uniting the past and the present.
Each coin is crafted to Proof quality from 54.30 grams of .999 fine silver and measures 50mm in diameter. Housed within a distinctive presentation case and complete with a 12-page historical booklet incorporating a Certificate of Authenticity. Containing almost two ounces of silver, this is the largest coin in the Subscription series to date and comes presented in its own specially crafted display case echoing the theme and character of the period. Final mintage will be determined by the response of collectors, and included in the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Controller of the Mint.
