The Royal Australian Mint celebrates the 130th Anniversary of the Melbourne Mint and its long history the mint has in producing Australia's and the British commonwealth early currency. The Melbourne Mint was established in 1872 due to large amount of Gold that was being extracted from the goldfields of New South Wales and Victoria. This coin is the latest in the series and is unique in that it is the first coin from the Royal Australian Mint to feature gold inlays or 'cameos' as part of its design. The coin has two tremendous designs depicting the first two coins released from the mint after it opened in 1872. They are the St. George and the Shield sovereigns. The sovereign cameos are struck from 24 carat gold and are inserted into the coin. The coin is minted from 99.9% pure silver and is struck to proof quality. This wonderful design is a limited edition proof coin as is housed in a black case.

The 2002 Year of the Outback 'Finale' proof coin has been released by the Royal Australian Mint. This is Australia's second only 'hologram' coin the worlds first triple Hologram coin. The coin features the stunning scene that has been the centrepiece of the issues for the year of the Outback. With improved technology, this years coin the hologram itself is bigger and the image more radiant than the first hologram coin. The photographs taken by NSW photographer Michael Scott Lees, of the Olgas.

With the improved technology the coin has three images that can be seen, First is the soft morning light, as the coin is moved, the image of the Olgas reddens with the heat of the day and the late afternoon. Then moving the coin again the Olgas disappear into the twilight of an outback night. The change in colour of the image is the result of minute ridges struck into the surface of the coin itself by the use of special 'shims' or small metal plates that act like dies when the coin is struck in the press. The coin is presented in a presentation case with a numbered certificate, and has a limited mintage to only 15,000. This coin would make a wonderful addition to the first hologram coin collection and a great start to everyone's collection.

The 28th of February 2002 was the 60th Anniversary of the battle of Sunda Strait, in which naval ships, the USS Houston and the HMAS Perth were surrounded by far superior enemy force in Sunda Strait in the Indonesian Archipelago.
The Royal Australian Mint has released these two collector coins to commemorate this event in honour of those who lost their lives in the battle, those crew members who died as prisoners of war, and those, as captives, who survived the privation and cruelty of wartime interment. These coins are a fitting tribute to those in the face of overwhelming odds showed outstanding courage in the battle, and in the prisoner of war camps. These two ships after escaping from the Battle of the Java Sea, were seeking safe passage through Sunda Strait, where they encountered an enemy invasion of some 80 odd vessels. Although surrounded and severely out gunned these ships fought valiantly until the end and sank within 20 minutes of each other in the early hours of the 1st of March.
These coins are part of the Bi Annual $5 series commemorating special events relevant to Australia as well as celebrating famous Australian and Australian icons.
The Aluminium bronze proof coin depicts the forward sections of the Perth and Houston, and is housed in a plush presentation case numbered and signed by the mints controller. The mintage of the proof coin is only 15,000.
The Uncirculated $5 coin is a bi - metal finish and has the image of the bell of the Houston, this coin is Aluminium bronze centre and surrounded by stainless steel ring, and is presented in a credit card style plastic holder.
There is two different types of packaging for this coin, one with HMAS Perth and the other with USS Houston.

This coin is being minted by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Adelaide Pound. The Adelaide Pound was the first gold coin struck in Australia using Australian gold and with a design and dies that were produced locally.
Due to the shortage of coins in the mid 1800s, the local colonial government authorised the Adelaide Pound coins to be struck. The Adelaide Pound coin was eventually re-called and melted down and so the pound had a higher gold content than its face value, so very few of the coins remain to this day. The commemorative coin features the image of the observe and the reverse of the 'type I' Adelaide Pound struck on a gold plated silver centre, which is the exact diameter of the original Adelaide Pound. It is surrounded by a ring of pure silver, and has a silver content of 60.50grams, and it is the largest coin yet produced by the Mint. This coin has a limited mintage of only 10,000 and is presented
in a beautiful presentation case, and a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The Royal Australian Mint commissioned Stuart Devlin, Geelong born Jeweller and Goldsmith to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to prepare the reverse design of this coin. The obverse features the standard effigy of the Queen, during her first visit to Australia as the Duchess of York on the 9th of May 1927. The design is based on a photograph of the Duchess of York as she was then attending the Adelaide Cup. The Obverse design differs from current proof coins in that the Queen's tiara and earring have been polished finished.
