The Perth Mint has released a special 1oz silver proof coin to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Sputnik, which was launched by the Soviet Union on 4th October 1957. The first man-made satellite to orbit the world, Sputnik’s success triggered the Space Race and efforts to realise the ultimate dream of landing men on the Moon.
The coin’s coloured reverse depicts the famous satellite in orbit. The unique construction of the ‘orbital’ coin, Sputnik literally revolves around an image of the Earth.
The coin is housed in an elliptical-shaped silver display case. The case comes in a blue box and each coin is accompanied by a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
This coin has a mintage of 25,000.
With four additions to the Orbit and Beyond Series scheduled for future release, each one celebrating an historic milestone in space explorations.

Phar Lap is Australia’s most famous horse, and whenever anyone is asked to mention one horse, more than likely Phar Lap will be mentioned. This coin will undoubtedly catch the imagination of many Australians who remain fascinated by the legend that is Phar Lap. Suspicion surrounding the demise of Phar Lap refuses to go away, even after 75 years. On 5 April 1932, Australia’s greatest racehorse died in puzzling circumstances on a ranch in California.
Devastated by the news, many Australians were convinced that their beloved chestnut gelding, the winner of 37 races from just 51 starts, had been deliberately poisoned.

This amazing coin from the Australian Lunar Silver Coin Series celebrates the Year of the Pig with a lenticular image comprising 24 coloured frames of a young pig with mountainous scenery in the background. As the viewing angle of the coin is changed, the frames produce a movie-like sequence showing the pig walking on grass.
