2008 Orbit and Beyond Series
1961 First Man in Space
Silver Dollar Coin

The Perth Mint has released the second coin in the orbital and beyond coin series. This coin pays tribute to the first man into space - The soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Yuri became a national hero by becoming the first human in space and the first to orbit the earth on 12th April 1961. The coins design portrays a montage of images symbolising Yuri's epic journey. Blasting off from Baikonurin soviet central Asia, he completed a single orbit of the Earth in 108 minutes before re entering the atmosphere and parachuting back to the Soviet Union. The coin is housed in a display case and accompanied by a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The words 90th Anniversary of the end of World War I are on the design. 2008 Christmas Island

The Perth Mint has released this special 1oz silver proof coin to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Christmas Island becoming an Australian Territory. On the 1st October 1958 Christmas Island became a Australian Territory after being under the British empire for many years. Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean approx. 2,650Km north-west of Perth and under Australian jurisdiction, more than 60% of the Island is now protected for the benefit of its many unique and unusual species and the preservation of their habitat. The coins design depicts the Golden Bosun bird, which is unique to Christmas Island, and a coloured large Red Crab. Millions of Red Crabs migrate annually from the rainforest on Christmas Island to the ocean. The 1oz silver proof coin is limited to no more than 5,000 silver coins and is presented in a teal coloured presentation case. 2008 25th Anniversary of Australia II's Victory

2008 Coat of Arms
One Dollar Uncirculated Coin

The 2008 $1 Mintmark coin embodies the elements of the original Coat of Arms granted in 1908 by HRH King Edward VII, seven years after federation. The coin design depicts the kangaroo and emu supporting the shield with pride. Some say these animals were chosen to symbolise a nation moving forward, based on the common belief that neither animal can move backwards easily. The shield displays the cross of St.George. Above the shield is a seven-pointed star, six of the points represent each of the States of the Commonwealth, the seventh point represents the Commonwealth Territories.

2008 Australian Antarctic Territory
Humpback Whale
1oz Silver Proof Dollar Coin

The Humpback Whale is known for its long, complex songs and unusual water acrobatics, the Humpback whale is perhaps the most interesting of the whales. Frequently spotted in shallow waters near coastlines, Humpbacks migrate seasonally from polar feeding grounds in summer to tropical and subtropical breeding locations in winter. While the Humpback whale is graceful they are slow and fat, because of this the humpback whales were targeted by whalers, and were killed by open boat whalers with hand harpoons in the 19th century. However, they survived in numbers until the 1950s and 1960s when illegal whaling reduced their numbers to near-extinction.

This 1oz silver proof coin struck by the Perth Mint is housed in a blue-coloured presentation case, which comes within a stylish outer shipper. A Numbered Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each coin. The Humpback whale silver coin is limited to only 7,500 coins.

The Royal Australian Mint’s annual ‘strike-to-order’ Subscription $1 Silver Proof coin is now available to order. Struck to the highest Proof quality from 60.4 grams of 99.9% silver the coin recreates the 1921 Kookaburra Penny.
The 1921 Kookaburra Type 12 penny, never went into circulation, and the original is very highly sourt after amongst collectors of rare coins. Official legal tender of Australia the mintage will be restricted. Measuring 50mm in diameter each coin will be presented in a plush, official RAM case with numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

2008 Australian Coat of Arms
1oz Silver Proof Dollar Coin

The coin’s reverse depicts the original Commonwealth Coat of Arms in colour. The year-date 1908 and the inscription Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The design has a white and blue shield displaying six small escutcheons and a cross of St. George featuring five six-pointed white stars.
The present Commonwealth Coat of Arms is depicted in colour on the coin’s obverse.
As is customary, it is portrayed on a background of golden wattle, Australia’s national floral emblem, and a scroll containing the word ‘ Australia’.

The design incorporates a shield containing the badges of the six Australian States

The border of the shield symbolises Federation, which occurred in 1901. The crest, featuring a wreath of gold and blue and a seven-pointed star, appears above the shield, which is supported by the kangaroo and emu. This coin has a limited mintage of just 7,500 coins.

The Australian International Polar series coins are part of an international program where a number of countries have issed silver proof coins commemorating the International Polar Year. The first in the series of Australian silver proof coins, features a foreground image of the Antarctic Skua in flight. These large heavy built birds are located in the subantarctic Islands and on the Antarctic continent, with a reputation of being fierce and aggressive. The background image shows the Australian Antarctic Territory with details of locations of several scientific base camps.
