The design of this silver proof coin illustrates the Melbourne city landscape along the famous Yarra River, which flows through the heart of the city. The Royal Australian Mint released the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games 50 Cent Uncirculated Coins. These coins incorporate the 16 sports competed for at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The coins incorporate the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games logo and incorporate designs representing each of the following sports,
Basketball, Hockey, Shooting and Weightlifting
Badminton, Gymnastics, Rugby 7’s and Cycling
Athletics, Triathlon, Netball and Table Tennis
Aquatics, Boxing, Lawn Bowls and Squash
The coins are minted as uncirculated –
these coins will not be circulated as currency. The coins are packaged in contemporary and highly colourful credit card style presentation cards.

The Royal Australian Mint is producing the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Coins. The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games are being held from the 15th March 2006 to the 26th March 2006.
The Queen's Baton Relay has been a much loved tradition of the Commonwealth Games since 1958. The Baton carries Her Majesty's message to the athletes from Buckingham Palace, London, to the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
This baton will travel more than 180,000 kilometres and visit all 71 Nations of the Commonwealth in one year and one day – making the Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay the world’s longest, most inclusive relay. The baton will be carried across the globe - over land, air and sea - by thousands of relay runners and on many different modes of transport.
The revolutionary baton contains state-of-the-art technical features, including two tiny ‘baton cam’ cameras, a microphone and a global positioning system to track the baton’s location at all times.

The three coins in this set depict the 17 sports that Australia's athletes contested at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and the logo of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
A series of human arms representing the 17 sports are displayed on the reveres of two of the coins.
