The coin's reverse portrays the grace and majesty of an Australian black swan in flight by Andor Mészáros (1900 - 1972). The design was suggested by the artist in 1966 for the reverse of Australia's new 20 cent decimal coin. Although it was not selected, the magnificent image is fondly remembered by many for its appearance on the obverse of Australia's legendary, but unofficial, 1967 "Goose" Dollar.
