Description

Continuing the tradition of international cooperation that began with the first International Polar Year (IPY) in 1882-1883, scientists from around the world will initiate a new era in polar research by participating in IPY 2007-2008. Working across many disciplines, they will conduct field observations, research and analysis to build upon current knowledge and increase our understanding of the roles that both Polar Regions play in global processes.

The first in the series of $5 fine silver proof coins, feature a foreground image of the Antarctic Skua in flight, these large heavy built birds are located in the Subantarctic Islands and on the Antarctic continent, with a reputation of being fierce and aggressive, the perfect symbol for our coin to represent the survival instincts of such a harsh environment. The background image shows the Australian Antarctic Territory with details of locations of several scientific base camps.
