Description

Anzac Day – April 25 – remains a deeply significant commemoration, honouring the military service and sacrifice of the Australian Defence Forces. The Gallipoli, or Dardanelles, Campaign took place on the territory of the Ottoman Empire between April 1915 and January 1916. The operations originated in a joint British and French mission to capture the capital, Istanbul, and secure a sea route to Russia.
On April 25 at around 4.15 am on a still spring morning, the first soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or ANZAC, made an amphibious landing on the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula. Although ultimately unsuccessful, the campaign has become a landmark in the development of the Australian national identity.

The design on this uncirculated $1 coin portrays Australian soldiers, or ‘diggers’ at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. A bugler in silhouette, the inscription ‘Lest We Forget’ and the date, April 25, are also incorporated in the design.

The coin is presented in a specially designed display card, which features a fold-out stand for upright display, and portrays a sole bugler at dawn.
