Description

On 24 May 1914, the Royal Australian Navy took delivery of its first submarines in Sydney, the two British-built E-class vessels HMAS AE1 and HMAS AE2, as part of a substantial upgrade of Australia’s fledgling naval fleet.

Today, the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Service consists of six Collins-class submarines located at the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Force Element Group Headquarters in Rockingham, Western Australia.
Over the past few decades Australian submarines have conducted extensive surveillance operations in South East Asia, including collecting vital intelligence during the Cold War.
No more than 3,000 of these 2014 Centenary of Australian Submarines 1oz silver coin and replica badge sets will be released by The Perth Mint.

The reverse of the coin features a coloured representation of a submarine cruising through the ocean. The ocean is portrayed as breaking through two concentric circular rope features that are derived from the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Service ship’s badge.
The dolphins and crown that feature in the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Service ship’s badge is also incorporated into the design.

This unique coin also features edge-lettering with the inscribed words SILENT SERVICE appearing three times around the edge of the coin.

Each coin and replica badge set is housed in a presentation case within a specially designed illustrated shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
