Description

The first Australian sovereign, featuring a unique ‘colonial’ design, was struck at the newly opened Sydney branch of The Royal Mint on 23 June 1855.

Following its release there ensued an unbroken 76-year history of gold sovereign production in Australia. More than 400 million coins were created in Sydney and at Royal Mint branches subsequently opened in Melbourne and Perth.

From 1871 the coins featured Imperial designs with the addition of ‘S’, ‘M’ or ‘P’ mintmarks respectively to identify their place of manufacture. The various combinations of reverse features and obverse effigies mean today’s collectors must find almost 200 different Australian sovereigns to complete a set.

The coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 91.70% gold.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 500 of the Australia Double Sovereign 2018 Gold Proof Coin.

The commemorative 2018 Australia Double Sovereign portrays St Edward’s crown and a laurel wreath with the words AUSTRALIA and DOUBLE SOVEREIGN, which are the historic elements of the original Leonard Charles Wyon Type I reverse.

The coin is housed in a prestigious wooden presentation case within a superbly illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
