On 18 December 2009, the United Nations proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of the Co-operatives (IYC). Voluntary, democratic, independent and self sufficient, the co-operative business model has been a major factor in realising economic growth and social development. Since the 1850’s, they have been a part of Australia’s socio-economic landscape, employing locals and redistributing profits back into local communities.
